Age spots, freckles and sun damage
First we determine how severe your sun damage is by analysing your skin with a special UV Scanner. This will indicate your sun damage, skin condition, facial veins & dehydration.
Pigmentation
There are various reasons for pigmentation to appear. The sun is culprit number one, but we are often our worst enemy and we make it worse by not wearing sunscreen on a daily basis. In the course of her work, Jenny sees many women who are so frustrated with having pigmentation (dark patches) that they feel their only choice is heavy make-up.
Hyperpigmentation occurs when too much melanin is produced and forms deposits in the skin. Patches in the skin become darker in colour than the normal surrounding skin. Age or “liver” spots are a common form of Hyperpigmentation in older adults, especially on the back of hands, in individuals who have been exposed to the sun. The medical name for this condition is solar lentigines.
Another cause is pregnancy, where the hormones in your system can cause a pattern of pigmentation often referred to as the “pregnancy mask”.
Similarly, due to hormones, the contraceptive pill often produces the same effects as pregnancy. Freckles, age spots, and other darkened skin patches can become darker or more pronounced when skin is exposed to the sun.
Men are not immune to pigmentation either. The alcohol in aftershave (and fragrance for that matter) can actually absorb UV radiation and cause pigmentation. So ladies, dab your fragrance behind the ears not all over the neck and chest. There are various ways to deal with pigmentation.
